Pipe Jacking Trenchless Construction Technology

The advent of trenchless technology has brought about an entirely new dimension in the installation of underground pipes, ducts and culverts as the demands of urbanisation become more stringent on the use of trenches for such installations. As a pioneer of this technology in Malaysia, Mersing Construction & Engineering Sdn Bhd has sufficient technical expertise to install pipes, ducts and culverts of various diameters, up to several hundred metres in length with minimal disruptions to the environment and to the existing infrastructure.

Manshield Method

One such method of the said no-dig technology is the manshield method. This method involves the use of hydraulic jacks, which provides the necessary driving force for thrusting specially designed pipes and / or culverts directly into the ground while excavation of soil is taking place from within manually or mechanically depending on the type of machine used. This jacking method provides a structurally flexible and watertight finished conduit.

This technique requires the construction of just two pits – the thrust and reception pits. Dimensions of pit varies according to the type of machine, pipes length and sites conditions. In extreme cases, pipe jacking can be carried out from small shafts. The major element in the thrust pit is the construction of the thrust wall, which must be strong enough to provide the reaction against which to jack. The thrust wall will be constructed inside the pit by using suitable anchorage.

MCE has the technical expertise which allows pipe lengths of up to several hundred metres using pipe diameters ranging from 900mm to 3 metres to be installed.

Microtunnelling Method

Microtunnelling, on the other hand, is another popularly used trenchless method. The distinctive feature of this system lies in the use of a sophisticated hi-tech equipment comprising of TV monitoring and laser guidance system which ensures safe, efficient and highly accurate operation through a wide range of soils with a counter balance cutting face.

The system provides graphical display of the cutter head position at all times and required data can be printed out on request.

Accuracy in the installation of a new pipeline in a highly density area whereby there is a maze of underground utility lines is very important. Microtunnelling is currently the most accurate line and grade pipeline installation method available.

Pumps with variable speed controls are used to feed water into the crushing chamber nozzles to reduce the excavated material into resultant slurry which is pumped out into the launching shaft by the slurry pump.
